Do you have a favorite line or lines from your accepted pieces for The Ginger Collect?
I think probably ‘I’ve seen the way you hold hands. It’s like you’re both trying to escape but really politely.’

What inspired your piece?
I wrote it a while ago, and I have a feeling it was inspired by a photo, but I can’t really remember. That would be a weird photo, wouldn’t it?

Who is your most influential writer? Who do you always go back to for inspiration?
Oh, so many. Jon McGregor. John Irving. Nikki Gemmell. Harper Lee. My mentor, Gillian McAllister.

What do you want readers to take away from your piece?
Most of my pieces are very emotional, but this one is pretty silly. I love to write something light-hearted as a break from writing a novel.

What season do you find you write the most in?
I go through fits and starts, but it’s usually related to my children rather than the season.

Do you keep any snacks around while you write? If so, what’s your favorite?
I have snacks around me at all times. Various forms of chocolate. I have a chocolate cupboard. Chocolate is very important to me.

Do you ever create soundtracks for the pieces you’re writing?
Never. I never have music on when I write. Maybe I should try it. I think it would have to be instrumental. I think lyrics would distract me.

What is your ideal writing environment?
I like to write in my big armchair with my feet up and chocolate close to hand.

Do you find writing invigorating or exhausting?
It can be both. I can’t not do it, but I find it tiring, too.

Do you have any future writing plans?
I’m currently editing a novel which is due to be published by Ipso Books next year.

You can read Laura Pearson’s piece in Issue Four of The Ginger Collect: Never Shall the Rabbit Mate with the Horse.
