The play on the name is very clever, as are the pop culture references listed throughout the story. That being said, are you a big fan of The Twilight Zone?
Oh hell yeah. The Twilight Zone is my third favorite TV Show of all time, and has been increadibly influential on my writing. My favorite episode is a season 4 hour long called “Death Ship” where an american space ship captained by Jack Klugman lands on a planet to find an identical ship had already crashed there, and it gets spookier from there. I also like the episodes “Five Characters in Search of an Exit” “Elegy” “Death’s Head Revisted” and “I Am the Night, Color Me Black” not to mention all the big hits from the show like “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” “Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up” and the rest.
This story almost had a Truman Show vibe to it. How would you feel if you were in the shoes of this couple?
I’ve always had this weird idea that when you die you can re watch any part of your life, so in a way I feel like I am Harris Burgess. Of course if I saw myself unexpectedly on TV like in the story, I’m not sure what I’d do. I guess I’d try everything I could to turn it off, but I’m not sure I would be to w/r/t curiosity.
The New Year is always a good time for new writing resolutions. Have you got any in mind for 2019?
I sure do, I’m going to try and write 2 new stories every month, some of which will be submitted (fingers crossed), to the Ginger Collect. I’m also planning to trying to sell my first book. A short story collection called “Realms Beyond Midnight World: A VHS Mixtape” and will include this story and others, designed in a way to emulate a VHS recording with programs, commercials, station bumps and so on.
If you had a message for readers about this story or writing in general, what would you say?
For the story… if you read anything I write, it should be this story, not that it’s my absolute best (thought it’s up there) but it’s a gallery, a lot of the episodes described in the story are stories I’ve either already written or ones I plan to write in the future. As far as writing goes, I would say… Let other people read your work and let them be honest about it, nice comments are nice to hear back, negative comments can be even more helpful.
Do you have any previously published pieces you’re particularly proud of?
This story itself contains references to other stories I have written (and some I plan to write) one of these is “Every Woman in the After Life Hates You” .
Also I’ve recently been published in an anthology produced by Critical Blast called “Gods and Services.”
My story “Legbaugh’s Holistic and Alternative Healing.” is another Twilight Zone-esque story. All the stories I’ve had in this magazine are some of my best, this one is the 7th.
You can read Zach Smith’s piece “Realms Beyond Midnight World” in Issue Eight of The Ginger Collect!
