Skyler Thayer

Who is your most beloved author?

I wouldn’t say that I have a most beloved author. However, what I do have is a profound interest and passion towards Transatlantic Romanticism; in other words, I have a strong connection with the Romantic writers from England and the United States. Out of these writers, I would consider both William Wordsworth and Edgar Allan Poe as my “favorites.” As a poet, I am greatly influenced by Wordsworth’s “Preface” to the Lyrical Ballads, and Poe’s “The Philosophy of Composition.”

Do you have a favorite quote from this author?

“Beauty of whatever kind in its supreme development invariably excites the sensitive soul to tears.” -Edgar Allan Poe, “The Philosophy of Composition”

What inspired your piece?

The inspiration for “Idle Reconstruction” was created from two elements. Firstly, the imagery was based on a private dock that’s along the shoreline of an incorporated village on Long Island, New York. During the past twenty-four years, I called this village, home. Secondly, for the past few years, there has been a strenuous political divide among village residents. “Idle Reconstruction” was formed from these two raw materials.
